Sisters of Light By Anangikage Long ago the Brothers of Dawn were founded. They helped to sculpt the minds and bodies of boys destined to rule. They trained them in the ways of philosophy and war, and sculpted the boys into leaders. Not long after, the Shadow Clan was created in order to influence those same ruling powers from behind the scenes. Unknown to the Brothers a third mysterious organization was forming to exert control over them. It began with their wives. Two score of ladies destined to act submissive because of being born without the proper equipment to have power. Two score of women who were born into ambitious families and married to ambitious husbands. Two score of women who decided they wanted more from life than what little titles and baubles were gifted to their spouses. While their husbands worked and trained all day, they could gather and chat about recipes, the weather and their children. After some time, one voiced her discontent at her husband's inability to gain any advancement. He was not the brightest star in the sky, nor the sharpest sword in the armory. Still her fate was decided by his competence. So they discussed possible ways her husband could get the recognition he didn't quite deserve . . . No where is it recorded how he made lieutenant, but the ladies were quite pleased with the result of their little experiment. Working together they insured all of their husbands promotions came more rapidly. As the men rose through the ranks of the army, the Ladies rose in station as well; always acting the part of the dutiful wife. Only occasionally, whispering humbly phrased suggestions to their spouses; usually while the men were most prone to suggestion. They were perfect wives to their husbands, and they trained their daughters well. It was probably one of those girls who convinced the daughter of an influential merchant that she should train with the Brotherhood. After the daughter's rejection, her father used his influence to protests against the Brothers of Dawn. The leaders of the brotherhood ordered the Shadow Clan to permanently remove the blight to their good name: thus turning the Shadows Clan into assassins. After the Midnight War, when the Leaders of the Brotherhood and the vast majority of the Shadow Clan had spilled each others' blood, almost all of the wives were left as widows. At his wife's suggestion the Koutei generously opened an abandoned castle which he renamed the House of Light. He freely invited all the widows to gather there and live under his protection. The wives gathered together and meditated; then sent word to the Koutei that his offer was too generous. Instead they offered an alternative: they would live in newly renovated House of Light in return for caring for and educating all of the children of the court. The widows would humbly serve as cooks and maids for the royal family and their guests. In return, all they asked was if their daughters could receive dowries so as to be able to find proper husbands and to raise their children in the same fashion that they were raised. After their request was granted, The Sisters of Light began their residence in both the High Court and in the House of Light . . . |
